Market Compass: The S&P 500 Was "Up." That Didn't Mean What I Thought It Meant.

I remember the first time I actually sat down and did the math by hand, comparing how the S&P 500's headline number moved against what an equal-weighted version of the same 500 stocks would have shown. The gap surprised me. The index was green. A simple average of the same constituents was flat, sometimes even red. A handful of enormous companies were doing all the work, and the "market" everyone was talking about on financial news wasn't really moving at all underneath the surface.

That distinction isn't trivia. It changes how you should interpret a move. A broad, every-stock-participating rally tells a different story than five mega-caps masking a quiet, directionless market — and if you're making decisions based on "the market is up" without knowing which kind of "up" you're looking at, you're working with less information than you think you have.

I didn't find a tool that showed me both numbers side by side in real time, so I wrote one. What started as a script pulling S&P 500 tickers and computing simple versus market-cap-weighted average percentage change turned into Market Compass — a proper desktop app, built with the same dark, cyan-accented trading terminal look as the rest of my tools, so it sits naturally alongside everything else I run.

The idea is right there in the tagline I gave it: Prepare. Analyze. Trade. Before you act on a headline number, know what's actually underneath it. Is this move broad, or is it borrowed from a handful of giants? Market Compass answers that at a glance, continuously, without you having to do the comparison by hand the way I did that first time.

It's a small tool with a narrow, specific job, and that's intentional. I built it to answer one question I kept asking myself and couldn't get a straight answer to anywhere else. Market Compass is currently available for FREE in Beta, SInce this is Beta version and not Code Signed yet your antivirus software may flag the install. That's it's job, allow it to scan the file and deem it safe then continue the install. Code Signed full release expected Oct 15th - 2026
